Nike Blue Ribbon Sports: Coast to Coast Chicago Pop-Up


The HN team had a chance to see the Nike Blue Ribbon Sports Coast to Coast Pop-up taking place in Chicago on October 12, 2019. As Nike re-launched a Blue Ribbon Sports brick and mortar earlier this year—their first brand identity back in the day, before becoming the iconic Swoosh—they embarked on a series of experiences, setting the BRS running initiative ablaze in select major cities across the nation. The Chicago pop-up location was nestled on the Lakefront trail, aiming to catch morning runners throughout the morning to early afternoon by enticing them with free exclusive BRS tees.

The traveling pop-up highlights a Nike Blue Ribbon Sports outfitted Volkswagen ID, evoking a similar but modernized version of the car that Jeff Johnson (Nike's first official employee) used to transport product throughout Southern California in the 1960s. Alongside the traveling Volkswagen, exclusive drops such as the limited edition Nike Cortez and Pegasus Turbo 2 were available to purchase at each activation, via the geo-specific location sensor on the SNKRS app. The pop-up also made the Blue Ribbon Sports archive book available to be viewed and interacted with by passersby; the book brimming with vintage photographs of Blue Ribbon Sports' humble beginnings. This in turn was accompanied by another archival book, this time to be filled throughout each experience in the form of instax photos taken of people who attend the activation, in hopes of cementing their experience as a greater part of the Blue Ribbon Sports history.
